Luz de Media Luna Educational Centre (Light of the Half Moon)

The Luz de Media Luna Educational Centre is directed at providing integrated protection of each vulnerable child in the city of Medellín.

The Centre emphasizes integrated education based in ethics, participation, solidarity, self management, peaceful coexistence and social justice to create autonomy within children.

The Luz de Media Luna Educational Centre was founded in 1995 under the name of the Luz de Media Luna Kindergarten, with the goal of protecting 35 children from internally displaced families, offering them food assistance and basic education. In 2009 this dream grew to provide more children with quality education and a commitment to their educational continuity, receiving accreditation as an Educational Centre from the Medellín Secretariat of Education.

dado del amorCurrently in the Educational Centre, integrated attention (education, nutrition and psychosocial attention) is provided to more than 150 children from pregnancy until 5 years of age. These children are victims of forced displacement whose parents sell items on the street or are engaged in informal employment.

Today in the Luz de Media Luna Educational Centre, children receive an integrated education based on the “Pedagogy of Love”, with the goal of educating them on the importance of values and exposing them to formative processes during their first years of life. The Centre also aims to strengthen the exercising of their rights, the strengthening of their identity and their sense of belonging. It seeks to promote community participation, gradually transform their environments and facilitate the construction of individual, family and collective life projects. The Educational Centre provides educational, psychosocial, nutritional, cultural, ecological, spiritual and recreational support, offering children and their families an opportunity to improve their quality of life.

Our pedagogy uses themes and topics so that children can transform their daily lives through artistic, games-basedabrazos and recreational activities that allow them to explore their worlds and develop in an integrated manner. The pedagogy transcends the physical concept of the classroom as it redefines the daily spaces in which a child develops and helps them to apply new concepts. Our children are educated in values and transform the way they see the world through significant learning experiences, their participation in “the Pedagogy of Love” and the recognition of their rights and responsibilities.

The thematic spaces are rotated so that the children are in constant movement and have the possibility of sharing these experiences with a range of educational agents and other children. This allows the children to be engaged in constant social interaction. Children are given the opportunity to develop their skills and capacities in a space for the creation, discovery and transformation of their symbolic worlds.
